Photo rules for each document

The sizes the tool uses, from each government’s own page. Where the rules give no head size, it uses the usual one and says so.

How to make a passport photo

  1. Pick your document, then choose a photo or take one with your camera, against a plain light wall.
  2. Your face is framed to the right head size and eye line. Move, zoom or turn the photo until it sits in the guides, and read the checks.
  3. Select Make my photos and download the photo for online forms and the sheet to print at 100%.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser on this device: framing, the checks, the background and the print sheet. Your face photo is never sent to a server, and nothing is kept once you close the page.

Will my photo be accepted?

Only the office that issues your document can say. This tool makes the size, head size and eye line match the rules it knows and points out common problems, but light, expression, glasses and how recent the photo is matter too. Read the official rules linked for your document, and if in doubt, ask the office.

Which documents does it know?

US passports and visas, UK passports, Schengen visas, Canadian and Indian passports, Mexico, Spain’s DNI and passport, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil’s 3 × 4 and passport photos for young children, and Portugal. Choose Custom size for anything else: type the size and how much of the height the head should take.

How do I print it at the right size?

Download the print sheet (JPG or PDF) and print it at 100%, or “actual size”, never “fit to page”. A 4 × 6 in or 10 × 15 cm sheet costs little at a photo shop or pharmacy; A4 and Letter suit a home printer. Cut along the grey lines.

Why does it download something the first time?

To find your face, your browser downloads a small AI model (0.2 MB) from this site and keeps it: YuNet, a face detector by Shiqi Yu and colleagues from OpenCV Zoo, under the MIT licence. Replacing the background uses a bigger one, IS-Net (88 MB, Apache 2.0), only if you ask. You can turn both off and line the photo up yourself.

Can I replace the background?

You can make it white or light grey, but many countries don’t allow edited photos, and a replaced background is an edit: the US, the UK, Canada and Mexico say so. The tool tells you what it knows for your document. The safest photo is one taken against a plain light wall.
