BMI is a screening measure for adults, not a diagnosis. It doesn’t account for muscle, age, sex or ethnicity. Children and teens are compared with others of their age and sex instead: ask a doctor or use a pediatric BMI calculator.

Questions

Are my measurements sent anywhere?

No. The calculator works in your browser on this device. Your measurements are never uploaded or stored, and they’re gone when you close the page.

How is BMI calculated?

Weight in kilograms divided by height in meters, squared: 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9. In US units the formula is 703 × pounds ÷ inches², which gives the same result. The BMI is shown to one decimal place.

What do the categories mean?

They’re the World Health Organization’s categories for adults: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity. The calculator places the BMI as shown, rounded to one decimal. Some health services use lower cut-offs for adults of South Asian, Chinese and some other backgrounds, whose health risks start at a lower BMI.

Does BMI work for everyone?

No. BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It doesn’t tell muscle from fat, so muscular people can score high, and it doesn’t account for age, sex or ethnicity. It isn’t used during pregnancy. For children and teens, BMI is compared with others of the same age and sex on percentile charts, so use a pediatric BMI calculator or ask a doctor. A doctor can say what a result means for you.
