Questions
Is it really free, and are my images uploaded?
It’s free, with no sign-up and no watermark. And nothing is uploaded: the AI runs inside your browser on this device, so your images are never sent to a server.
Why does it download something the first time?
The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI model, a file of about 5 MB, from this site, and keeps it for next time. The model only does the work: your images stay on your device.
Which AI model does it use?
Real-ESRGAN (its realesr-general-x4v3 model) by Xintao Wang and colleagues, released under the BSD 3-Clause licence.
Will it bring back detail that isn’t in my picture?
No. The AI sharpens edges and textures and adds plausible detail, but it guesses: it can’t bring back text, faces or numbers too blurry to read, and what it adds may not match the real thing. Don’t rely on it where the exact detail matters, such as evidence.
How big can my images be, and does it work on phones?
Up to 4 megapixels (for example 2300 × 1700 px), and less for 4× on iPhones and iPads. Make bigger images smaller with Resize images first. It works on phones in an up-to-date browser, but a computer is faster, especially one with a recent graphics card.
