Questions
Is it really free, and are my photos uploaded?
It’s free, with no sign-up and no watermark. And nothing is uploaded: the AI runs inside your browser on this device, so your photos are never sent to a server.
Why does it download something the first time?
The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI model, a file of about 88 MB, from this site. Your browser keeps it, so next time the tool starts straight away. The model only does the work: your photos stay on your device.
Which AI model does it use?
IS-Net, from “Highly Accurate Dichotomous Image Segmentation” by Xuebin Qin and colleagues, with its general-use weights, released under the Apache 2.0 licence. It runs in a version for browsers published by IMG.LY.
How good are the results?
Very good for people, pets and products that stand out from their background. Fine hair and fur, glass and see-through objects, and edges close in colour to the background are harder: there the cut-out may keep a little of the background or lose a little of the subject.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in an up-to-date browser. The model needs a lot of memory, so on older phones large photos can be slow or fail. A computer is much faster, especially one with a recent graphics card.
