How to work out how much paint you need

    1. Enter the room’s length, width and wall height, or the wall area if you’ve measured it.
    2. Add the number of doors and windows, and include the ceiling if you’re painting it.
    3. Check the coats and coverage, then read how much paint to buy.

    Questions

    Are my measurements sent anywhere?

No. The calculator works in your browser on this device. Your measurements are never uploaded or stored, and they’re gone when you close the page.

How much does a gallon of paint cover?

Usually 350 to 400 square feet per coat on smooth, primed walls, and less on rough or bare surfaces. In metric, most wall paints cover about 10 square meters per liter. The can says what yours covers: enter that for a closer figure.

How many coats do I need?

Two coats is the norm for an even finish, especially when you change color. One coat can be enough when repainting the same color, and new drywall or a big color change may need a primer first.

    Should I buy extra?

These figures are estimates. Buy a little more than you need for touch-ups later, and buy it all at once: colors can vary slightly between batches.
