How to generate UUIDs

  1. Choose version 4 (random) or version 7 (time-ordered), and how many you need.
  2. Pick a format: upper case, without hyphens or in braces.
  3. Copy the UUIDs or download them as a text file. Press Generate again for new ones.

Questions

Are the UUIDs made on a server?

No. They’re made in your browser with its cryptographically secure random number generator, and never sent or stored anywhere, so nobody else has a copy.

Should I use version 4 or version 7?

Version 4 is fully random and the most widely used. Version 7 starts with the current time, so new IDs sort in the order they were made, which makes them faster as database keys. Both are defined in RFC 9562.

Can two UUIDs ever be the same?

In practice, no. A version 4 UUID has 122 random bits: you would need to make billions a second for many years before a repeat became likely.

Is a GUID the same as a UUID?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for a UUID. Choose upper case and braces for the {…} style some Microsoft tools use.
