Questions
Is it safe to use an online password generator?
This one makes passwords in your browser with its built-in cryptographic random number generator. Passwords are never sent, stored or logged, and they’re gone when you close the page. It even keeps working if you go offline after the page loads.
How long should my password be?
At least 12 characters with letters, numbers and symbols, and 16 or more for important accounts such as email and banking. Each extra character multiplies the guesses needed. If a site limits length or symbols, go as long as it allows.
What does the strength rating mean?
Strength is measured in bits of entropy, which count how many different passwords your settings can produce: each extra bit doubles the guesses needed. The time shown assumes a fast attacker trying 10 billion guesses a second.
Why avoid look-alike characters?
Characters such as I, l, 1, O and 0 are easy to mix up when you read a password aloud or type it from paper. Leaving them out makes passwords easier to copy by hand. It lowers the strength slightly, which one extra character makes up for.
