Add page numbers to a PDF

Number the pages of a PDF at the top or bottom, left, centre or right, as 1, Page 1, 1 / 12 or Page 1 of 12. Leave out the cover, start from any number, and see it on the page first. Your file stays on your device.

  2. Choose where the numbers go, how they look and which pages get one. The preview shows the first numbered page.
  3. Select Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

Questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser does all the work on this device. The files are never sent to a server, so there is nothing for anyone to store, read or leak.

Does adding page numbers change anything else?

No. Each number is added on top of its page and nothing else is touched: text, pictures, links and bookmarks stay exactly as they were. Numbers read the right way up on sideways pages and keep the same distance from the edge on pages of any size.

Can I leave out the cover page?

Yes. Turn on Don’t number the first page. Numbering then starts on the second page, from the number in Start at, so set that to 2 if the cover should count as page 1.

Can I take the numbers off again?

Your original PDF isn’t changed, so keep it if you might want the pages without numbers. In the numbered copy the numbers are ordinary text added on top, which a PDF editor can delete.
