Questions

Are my values sent anywhere?

No. The calculator works in your browser on this device. Your values are never uploaded or stored, and they’re gone when you close the page.

How exact are the conversions?

They use the exact definitions: an inch is 2.54 cm, a pound 0.45359237 kg, a US gallon 3.785411784 liters and an imperial gallon 4.54609 liters. Results show up to 10 significant figures, and very large or very small numbers as powers of ten.

What’s the difference between US and imperial units?

Lengths and weights are the same, but volumes aren’t. A US gallon is 3.785 liters and an imperial (UK) gallon 4.546 liters; a US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml and an imperial one 28.41 ml. US recipes use a cup of 236.6 ml, while Canada, Australia and many other countries use a metric cup of 250 ml.

Is a gigabyte 1,000 or 1,024 megabytes?

Both are in use. Drive makers and networks count in thousands: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows and some apps count in 1,024s but still write GB; the exact name for that unit is the gibibyte (GiB), 1,073,741,824 bytes. That’s why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB.
