Questions
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser on this device. Your text is never uploaded or stored, so it’s safe to paste private documents.
How are characters counted?
The way you see them: a letter with an accent, an emoji with a skin tone and a flag each count as one character, even when they’re made of several Unicode code points. Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Why does X count my post differently?
X counts every emoji as 2 characters, letters in scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean as 2, and every link as 23, however long it is. The X bar follows those rules for the usual 280-character limit.
How long can a text message be?
One SMS holds 160 characters of the standard GSM alphabet, or 70 if the text has any other character, such as an emoji or a letter like á or ç. Longer messages are sent in parts of 153 or 67 characters. The SMS bar shows which alphabet your text needs, how many parts it takes and which characters switch it to Unicode.
What are bytes?
The size of the text in UTF-8, the encoding used by websites and most files and databases. Plain letters take 1 byte, accented letters 2, many symbols 3 and most emoji 4, so a text can have more bytes than characters. That matters when a form or a database field limits size in bytes.
