Questions
What’s the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice asks to be paid; a receipt confirms a payment was received. This receipt says it was paid in full, with the payment method and date. If a client has paid only part of an invoice, use Amount already paid in the invoice generator instead, so the balance due shows.
Who should make the receipt?
The business or person who received the money. Make receipts only for payments you received yourself: a receipt is your own statement that you were paid.
Does a receipt replace a tax invoice?
Not always. Where a tax invoice is required, a receipt doesn’t take its place. In some countries a tax invoice only counts when it’s issued through an official system: in Brazil a nota fiscal (NF-e for goods, NFS-e for services) has to be issued through the official tax systems, in Mexico an invoice with tax value is a CFDI certified by the SAT or an authorized provider, several other Latin American countries work the same way, and Spain is bringing in rules for invoicing software (Verifactu) and electronic invoices between businesses, with dates that have already moved more than once. This tool doesn’t issue those official documents, so check what applies where you work.
Can the receipt show tax included in the price?
Yes. Tick “Prices include tax” and the receipt shows the tax contained in each rate’s total, as shop receipts usually do, instead of adding it on top.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The receipt is made by your browser on this device. What you save, such as your clients and past receipts, is kept in this browser only, never on our servers.
