Every morning the baker on our street opens her shop before the sun comes up. By six o'clock the windows are warm and the air smells of fresh bread. People stop on their way to work, buy a loaf or two and chat about the weather. She knows most of them by name, and she always saves the last cinnamon roll for the man who walks his old dog past at noon.
The clock starts with your first key. Esc starts again with the same text.

How to take the typing test
- Choose a length (1, 2 or 5 minutes, 25 to 100 words, or No timer) and a text: passages, easy or common words, punctuation or numbers.
- Select the text box and start typing. The clock starts with your first key; mistakes turn red and can be fixed with Backspace.
- When time is up or the text is done, read your speed, accuracy and errors, see how your speed changed, and find the keys that slow you down. Esc starts again.
Questions
How is typing speed worked out?
A “word” is 5 characters, spaces included. Gross speed (raw WPM) is everything you typed divided by 5, per minute. Net speed takes off one word per minute for every mistake left in the text, so fixing mistakes pays. For example, 300 characters in one minute with 5 mistakes left is 60 WPM gross and 55 WPM net.
What does accuracy count?
Every key you pressed. A mistake you erase still counts against accuracy, because you typed it, but not against net speed once it’s fixed. Errors shows all of them, and how many were left unfixed.
What is a good typing speed?
Many people type 35 to 45 words per minute. Around 60 is quick, and professional typists often reach 70 or more. Accuracy matters more than speed at first: aim for 95% or better and speed comes with practice.
Does it work with my keyboard and language?
Yes. The test compares the characters you type, not the keys, so any keyboard layout works: US, UK, Spanish, Brazilian ABNT2 and others, including accents typed with accent keys. Spanish and Portuguese pages have their own texts with accents, ñ and ç.
Can I take it without a clock or with a screen reader?
Yes. Choose No timer to type at your own pace and finish when you like. The text to type is read out with the text box, and with “Read out the next words” on, each new part is announced as you reach it. The time left, halfway and your results are announced too.
Is my typing saved or sent anywhere?
No. The test runs in your browser and what you type is never sent. Your personal best for each length and text, and your settings, are kept in this browser on this device only.
