Fraction calculator with steps
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, mixed numbers and whole numbers, then see each step: the common denominator, multiplying across and simplifying. You can also simplify a fraction and turn it into a decimal or a percentage.
Answer
- Simplest fraction
- Mixed number
- None: it’s between −1 and 1
- Decimal
- 0.83 (3 repeating)
- Percentage
- 83.3% (3 repeating)
Steps
Find a common denominator. Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6. Multiples of 3: 3, 6. The smallest one they share is 6, the least common multiple (LCM).
Multiply the top and bottom of 1/2 by 3, so its denominator is 6.
Multiply the top and bottom of 1/3 by 2, so its denominator is 6.
Add the numerators and keep the denominator 6.
5/6 is already in simplest form: the top and bottom have no common factor except 1.
Answer
- Simplest fraction
- Mixed number
- None: it’s between −1 and 1
- Decimal
- 0.75
- Percentage
- 75%
Steps
Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24. The greatest common factor (GCF) is 6.
Simplify: the greatest common factor (GCF) of 18 and 24 is 6, so divide the top and bottom by 6.
As a decimal: divide 3 by 4.
As a percentage: multiply by 100.

How to use the fraction calculator
- Type the first number: a fraction in the top and bottom boxes, and a whole number in the first box for a mixed number such as 2 3/4.
- Choose +, −, × or ÷ and type the second number. The answer and the steps update as you type.
- Read the steps, or copy them. To simplify or convert one number, open Simplify and convert and type a fraction, decimal or percentage.
Questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator first: the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. For 1/2 + 1/3 it’s 6, so 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 1/3 becomes 2/6. Then add the numerators and keep the denominator: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Subtracting works the same way.
How do I enter a mixed number or a negative number?
Put the whole number in the first box and the fraction in the other two: 2, 3 and 4 make 2 3/4. Leave the whole-number box empty for a plain fraction, or fill in only that box for a whole number. For a negative number, put the minus sign in front of the first number you type: −2 3/4 or −3/4.
How do you simplify a fraction?
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common factor (GCF). For 18/24, the factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18, and those of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24. The greatest one they share is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. A fraction whose top and bottom share no factor but 1 is in simplest form.
How do you divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: flip it upside down. So 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12, which simplifies to 5/6. You can’t divide by zero, so the second number can’t be 0.
How do I turn a fraction into a decimal or a percentage?
Divide the top by the bottom: 3/8 = 0.375. Multiply by 100 for a percentage: 37.5%. Some decimals never end, like 1/3 = 0.333…; the calculator puts a bar over the digits that repeat. Simplify and convert also goes the other way, from 0.375 or 37.5% back to 3/8.
What do the fraction bars show?
Each bar is one whole cut into as many equal parts as the denominator, with the numerator’s parts shaded, so you can see how big each fraction is. They’re only a picture: every step is also written out in words.
