Questions
How do I convert UTC to EST?
Subtract 5 hours: 15:00 UTC is 10:00 AM EST. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November New York is on EDT, so subtract 4 hours instead: 15:00 UTC is 11:00 AM EDT. When the result goes back past midnight, it’s the day before.
Is UTC the same as GMT?
For everyday use, yes: both are the time at 0° longitude, with no daylight saving time. UTC is the precise standard kept by atomic clocks and used by computers, aviation (where it’s called Zulu time) and science. But London isn’t on GMT in summer, so UK time is an hour ahead of UTC from late March to late October.
Why do servers and logs use UTC?
UTC never changes for daylight saving time, so its times never repeat or skip an hour, and they sort correctly wherever the readers are. Times are converted to local time only to show them to people, as this page does.
