Questions
What’s the time difference between CET and EST?
Six hours: 3:00 PM in Berlin is 9:00 AM in New York. In summer Europe moves to CEST (UTC+2) and New York to EDT (UTC−4), so it’s still 6 hours. The exception is the weeks between the two changes: Europe switches on the last Sundays of March and October, the US on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, and in between the gap is 5 hours.
Which countries use CET?
Most of continental Europe: Germany, France, Spain (but not the Canary Islands), Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, among others. The UK, Ireland and Portugal are an hour behind; Greece, Finland, Romania and Ukraine an hour ahead.
What’s a good time for a meeting between Europe and the US East Coast?
With 9-to-5 days, 9:00 to 11:00 AM in New York is 3:00 to 5:00 PM in Central Europe. That two-hour window is the usual choice for transatlantic calls, and the earlier the better for the European side.
