Typing lessons
Learn to type without looking, a few keys at a time. Start on the home row and move out to the top and bottom rows, numbers, capitals and punctuation, with an on-screen keyboard that shows the next key and the finger to use.
The keyboard and lessons follow it. Any keyboard works for typing.
Home row, drill 1: f and j
New keys: f and j
fff jjj
Esc starts the drill again. Enter goes to the next one when it’s done.
Next: f. Left index finger.
Type the text above. The keyboard lights up the next key.

How to learn touch typing
- Pick your keyboard layout, then start with the Home row lesson. Rest your fingers on the home keys: the bumps on F and J guide your index fingers.
- Type each drill while looking at the screen, not your hands. The on-screen keyboard lights up the next key, and the colours show which finger presses it.
- Finish a drill with 90% accuracy or more to tick it off, then move to the next. A few minutes a day works better than one long session.
Questions
What is touch typing?
Typing without looking at the keyboard, with each finger in charge of its own keys. Your fingers rest on the home row and reach up and down from there. It feels slow for the first few days, then becomes much faster and more comfortable than hunting for keys.
Why do the lessons start with the home row?
The home row is where your fingers rest, so it’s the base for every other key. Each drill adds one or two keys and uses only keys you have already learned, so you never have to look for a key you haven’t practiced.
My keyboard is different. Will the lessons work?
Choose your layout: English (US), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America) or Portuguese (Brazil, ABNT2). The keyboard and the drills change to match, so the home row ends in ñ or ç where your keyboard has it, and there is a lesson on the accent keys.
What does “Stop at mistakes” do?
With it on, a wrong key isn’t typed: the caret waits until you press the right one, and the keyboard keeps showing it. Turn it off to keep going past mistakes and fix them with Backspace, as in the typing test.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in this browser on this device: which drills you’ve finished, your best speed and accuracy in each, your layout and settings. Nothing is sent to us, and there’s no account.
