How to convert a Unix timestamp
- Paste a timestamp, such as 1700000000, or type a date, such as 2026-10-29 14:30.
- Read the date in UTC, in your time zone and in the zone you choose, as ISO 8601 and RFC 2822, and how long ago it was. The unit comes from the number of digits; choose one if that guess is wrong.
- Copy any value. To convert a whole list, paste it under Convert many at once, one per line.
Questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970, a moment known as the Unix epoch. At any instant it’s the same number everywhere in the world, which is why computers store time this way. Leap seconds aren’t counted.
Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
Count the digits. Today’s time is 10 digits in seconds (Unix, PHP, Python), 13 in milliseconds (JavaScript’s Date.now(), Java), 16 in microseconds and 19 in nanoseconds (Go, some databases). The converter decides from the length, says which unit it used, and lets you choose another.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that keep the timestamp in a signed 32-bit number can count only to 2,147,483,647 seconds: 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. One second later the number overflows and the date jumps back to 1901. Today’s systems use 64 bits, which last for billions of years. The converter warns when a date is past that limit.
How is a date without a time zone read?
In the zone you choose under “Dates without a time zone are in”: yours, UTC or the zone below. A time skipped when clocks go forward is read as the time just after the change, and a time that happens twice when they go back as the first, as calendars do. A date ending in Z or an offset such as +05:30 is read exactly.
Do negative timestamps work?
Yes. Negative numbers count back from 1970, so -86400 is 31 December 1969. Any date from 271,821 BC to the year 275,760 can be shown, the range of JavaScript’s dates.
