Tips for a better UK photo

  • A plain cream or light grey wall works best; a pale grey sheet of paper behind you will do.
  • Face the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed, and keep your eyes open and visible.
  • Light your face evenly, with no shadows on your face or behind you.
  • Photos for the online service must have been taken in the last month.

The official rules decide, and they change. This tool helps you meet the rules it knows, but it can’t promise a photo will be accepted: check the official page, and ask the office if in doubt.

In millimetres: 35 × 45 mm.

How to make a UK passport photo

  1. Stand against a plain cream or light grey wall and have someone take your photo, or choose a recent one.
  2. Check the framing: chin and crown in their bands, eyes on the line, and the checks for light and background.
  3. Make your photos and print the sheet at 100%, or use your original photo for the online application.

Questions

What size is a UK passport photo?

Printed photos are 45 mm high and 35 mm wide, and your head, from the bottom of the chin to the crown (the top of your head, not your hair), must measure 29 to 34 mm. The tool frames it to that.

Which photo do I upload to the online service?

GOV.UK asks for a digital photo of at least 600 × 750 pixels and 50 KB to 10 MB, and if you take it yourself, not to crop it: the service crops it for you. So upload your original, uncropped photo there, and use this tool to check it and to make printed copies.

What colour should the background be?

Plain cream or light grey for printed photos, and plain and light-coloured for digital ones, with no shadows or objects. The photo can’t be altered by software, so take it against such a wall rather than replacing the background.

Can I print it at home?

GOV.UK asks for photos printed on plain white photographic paper with no border, so a photo shop is the safer choice. Print the sheet at 100%, not “fit to page”, and cut along the grey lines.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser on this device: framing, the checks, the background and the print sheet. Your face photo is never sent to a server, and nothing is kept once you close the page.
