Tips for a better Passport Seva photo
- Stand in front of a white wall, about 1.5 metres from the camera.
- Look straight at the lens with a natural expression, your eyes open and your mouth closed.
- Avoid shadows, flash reflections and red eye: daylight from a window works well.
- Your face should nearly fill the photo, from the top of your hair to your chin.
The official rules decide, and they change. This tool helps you meet the rules it knows, but it can’t promise a photo will be accepted: check the official page, and ask the office if in doubt.
In millimetres: 35 × 45 mm.
How to make an Indian passport photo

- Check that your face fills the band from the top of your hair to your chin, and that your eyes are level.
- Make your photos and upload the 630 × 810 JPEG, or print the 35 × 45 mm photos.
Questions
What size is the Indian passport photo upload?
630 × 810 pixels, in colour, with your face taking about 80 to 85% of the photo, from the top of your hair to your chin, on a white background. Indian missions ask for a JPEG of up to 200 KB (some allow 250 KB), so the file is kept under 200 KB.
Do I need a photo in India?
Not for a passport applied for in India: the Passport Seva Kendra takes your photo at the appointment. Applications abroad, through the Global Passport Seva portal, upload one.
Can I replace the background with white?
The Passport Seva guidelines ask for photos unaltered by computer software, though some Indian embassies suggest making the background white. The safest photo is taken against a white wall; check with your mission before editing.
Can I wear glasses?
Indian missions ask you to remove glasses, and allow head coverings only for religious reasons, with the face fully visible.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser on this device: framing, the checks, the background and the print sheet. Your face photo is never sent to a server, and nothing is kept once you close the page.
