About New Year

  • January 1 has opened the year in the Gregorian calendar since it began in 1582, though not everywhere: England started its legal year on March 25 until 1752.
  • The first places to see the new year are Kiribati’s Line Islands, at UTC+14. American Samoa, at UTC−11, is among the last.
  • In Spain, people eat twelve grapes at midnight, one at each stroke of the clock, for twelve lucky months.
  • In Brazil, many people wear white on New Year’s Eve, the Réveillon, and jump seven waves at the beach for luck.

How the countdown works

  1. The countdown starts as soon as the page opens, and counts to midnight at the start of January 1 on your device’s clock, in your time zone.
  2. On the day itself it says so, and from the next day it counts to the following year’s date.
  3. The table shows the date in the coming years. For any other date, use the countdown to a date.

Questions

When does the New Year countdown reach zero?

At midnight on January 1 on your device’s clock, so in your own time zone. Someone in another time zone sees it end at their midnight, hours before or after you.

How many days are there in the year?

365, or 366 in a leap year, when February has 29 days. Leap years are those divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400: 2028 is a leap year, 2100 won’t be.

Is January 1 a public holiday?

Yes, in the United States, Spain, Mexico, Brazil and almost every country that uses the Gregorian calendar. In the US, when it falls on a Saturday, federal offices close on Friday, December 31.
