About Mardi Gras and Carnival
- Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday”, the last day before Ash Wednesday and the 40 days of Lent.
- It moves with Easter: always a Tuesday 47 days before Easter Sunday, so between February 3 and March 9.
- Brazil’s Carnival runs from Saturday to Tuesday, and parades and street parties often go on until Ash Wednesday morning.
- In New Orleans, parades fill the weeks before Fat Tuesday. In Spain, the carnivals of Cádiz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are the best known, and Barranquilla’s in Colombia is on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

How is the date of Mardi Gras set?
From Easter: Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter Sunday (the 40 days of Lent plus its six Sundays), and Mardi Gras is the day before. Easter falls between March 22 and April 25, so Mardi Gras falls between February 3 and March 9.
Which day does the countdown count to?
To midnight at the start of Carnival Tuesday, the day of Mardi Gras. In Brazil and Spain the celebrations start the weekend before.
Is Carnival a public holiday?
In Brazil, Carnival Monday and Tuesday are optional days off rather than national holidays, but banks and most offices close. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras is a city holiday. In Spain it depends on the town.
