About Black Friday

  • Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving, so it falls between November 23 and 29.
  • Police in Philadelphia were calling it “Black Friday” by the early 1960s, after the crowds and traffic that day. The story about shops going “into the black” came later.
  • Brazil’s first Black Friday was in 2010, and Spain’s took off in the 2010s, on the same date as in the US.
  • Mexico has its own sales weekend, El Buen Fin, in mid-November since 2011. Cyber Monday follows Black Friday on the next Monday.

How the countdown works

  1. The countdown starts as soon as the page opens, and counts to midnight at the start of Black Friday on your device’s clock, in your time zone.
  2. On the day itself it says so, and from the next day it counts to the following year’s date.
  3. The table shows the date in the coming years. For any other date, use the countdown to a date.

Questions

How is the date of Black Friday set?

It’s the Friday after US Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November. Shops in Spain, Mexico and Brazil use the same date.

When do Black Friday deals start?

Many shops start their offers earlier in the week, or even in early November, and some keep them going through Cyber Monday. The countdown is to the Friday itself.

Is Black Friday a public holiday?

No. In the US many people have the day off after Thanksgiving, but it isn’t a federal holiday, and in Spain, Mexico and Brazil it’s a normal working day.
