About Halloween

  • Halloween is the eve of All Saints’ Day, November 1: its name comes from “All Hallows’ Eve”.
  • Its traditions go back to Samhain, the Gaelic festival at the end of the harvest, when the boundary with the world of spirits was said to be thin.
  • The first jack-o’-lanterns were carved from turnips in Ireland and Scotland. In North America, pumpkins took over.
  • In Mexico, Halloween runs into the Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2. In Brazil, some cities and states mark October 31 as Dia do Saci, after a character of Brazilian folklore.

How the countdown works

  1. The countdown starts as soon as the page opens, and counts to midnight at the start of October 31 on your device’s clock, in your time zone.
  2. On the day itself it says so, and from the next day it counts to the following year’s date.
  3. The table shows the date in the coming years. For any other date, use the countdown to a date.

Questions

Is Halloween always on October 31?

Yes. Only the day of the week changes, which the table shows for the coming years. Parties and trick-or-treating are often on the weekend before when it falls midweek.

Is Halloween a public holiday?

No, not in the United States, Spain, Mexico or Brazil. November 1, All Saints’ Day, is a public holiday in Spain.

When does the Halloween countdown reach zero?

At midnight at the start of October 31 on your device’s clock. Trick-or-treating starts in the evening, so you’ll have the whole day to get ready.
