The day is named after Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr of the 3rd century. It was first linked with love in the 14th century, in a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer.
In Mexico and much of Latin America it’s the Day of Love and Friendship, so friends swap cards and gifts too.
Brazil celebrates its Dia dos Namorados on June 12 instead, the eve of the feast of Saint Anthony, known there as the matchmaker saint.
In Japan and South Korea, women give chocolates on February 14, and men return the favour a month later, on White Day.
