How the countdown works
- The countdown starts as soon as the page opens, and counts to midnight at the start of Thanksgiving Day on your device’s clock, in your time zone.
- On the day itself it says so, and from the next day it counts to the following year’s date.
- The table shows the date in the coming years. For any other date, use the countdown to a date.
Questions
How is the date of Thanksgiving set?
By federal law, it’s the fourth Thursday of November. November 1 can fall on any day of the week, so the fourth Thursday is between November 22 and 28.
Is the day after Thanksgiving a holiday?
Not a federal one, but many employers and schools close, which is how Black Friday became the start of the holiday shopping season.
Why did the date move in 1939?
In 1939 November had five Thursdays, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving a week earlier to lengthen the shopping season. Some states followed and others didn’t, so in 1941 Congress set the fourth Thursday for everyone.
