About Easter
- Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the church’s full moon on or after March 21, so it falls between March 22 and April 25.
- The earliest date, March 22, last happened in 1818 and next comes in 2285. The latest, April 25, happened in 1943 and comes again in 2038.
- Good Friday, two days before, is a public holiday in Spain and Brazil, and Holy Thursday is too in most of Spain.
- Orthodox churches work out Easter with the older Julian calendar, so their Easter is often a week or more later.

How the countdown works
- The countdown starts as soon as the page opens, and counts to midnight at the start of Easter Sunday on your device’s clock, in your time zone.
- On the day itself it says so, and from the next day it counts to the following year’s date.
- The table shows the date in the coming years. For any other date, use the countdown to a date.
Questions
How is the date of Easter worked out?
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. That “full moon” comes from tables, not from the sky, so everyone gets the same date. The rule goes back to the Council of Nicaea in 325; the tables in use today come from the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582. The page works it out with the computus, the same calculation.
When are Holy Week and Good Friday?
Holy Week is the week before Easter Sunday: Palm Sunday is a week before, Holy Thursday three days before and Good Friday two days before.
Which other dates follow Easter?
Mardi Gras is 47 days before it and Ash Wednesday 46 days before. Ascension Day is 39 days after, Pentecost 49 days after, and Corpus Christi 60 days after, a holiday in parts of Spain and an optional day off in Brazil.
