Spain’s official time, as of 2026
- Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla use Central European Time: UTC+1 in winter (CET) and UTC+2 in summer (CEST), like Paris, Berlin and Rome.
- The Canary Islands use Western European Time, an hour behind: UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, like Portugal and the UK. Spanish radio says “una hora menos en Canarias”.
- Summer time starts on the last Sunday in March, when the clocks go forward from 2:00 to 3:00 (1:00 to 2:00 in the Canaries), and ends on the last Sunday in October, when they go back from 3:00 to 2:00. The whole EU changes at the same moment, 01:00 UTC (Royal Decree 236/2002 and EU Directive 2000/84/EC).
- The European Commission has published the dates up to 2031: in 2027 the clocks change on March 28 and October 31.
- Spain moved to Central European Time in 1940, though most of it lies as far west as the UK. That’s why the sun rises and sets so late there.

Questions
What time zone is Spain in?
Two. As of 2026, mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are on Central European Time (UTC+1, or UTC+2 in summer), and the Canary Islands on Western European Time, an hour behind (UTC+0, or UTC+1 in summer).
When do the clocks change in Spain?
As of 2026, twice a year, with the rest of the EU: forward an hour on the last Sunday in March and back an hour on the last Sunday in October. In 2027 that’s March 28 and October 31. The clock on this page follows your browser’s time zone rules, so it changes on the right day by itself.
Will Spain stop changing its clocks?
In October 2025 Spain’s government asked the EU to end the twice-yearly change. As of November 2026 nothing has been decided, and the EU has already published summer time dates up to 2031. If the rules change, this clock follows as soon as your browser updates.
