Mexico’s official time, as of 2026

  • Mexico stopped daylight saving time in October 2022 under its Time Zones Law (Ley de los Husos Horarios). Mexico City and most of the country stay on UTC−6 all year.
  • The law sets four zones: Central (UTC−6), Pacific (UTC−7: Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Sonora and Nayarit), Northwest (UTC−8: Baja California) and Southeast (UTC−5: Quintana Roo).
  • Only towns on the US border still change their clocks, on the US dates: forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, at 2:00. Baja California keeps California’s time, Ciudad Juárez El Paso’s, and the border towns of Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas Texas’s.
  • Cancún and the rest of Quintana Roo moved to UTC−5 all year in 2015, for longer evenings: the same as New York in winter.

Questions

Does Mexico still have daylight saving time?

Mostly not. Mexico ended it in October 2022, and as of 2026 only towns along the US border change their clocks, on the same days as the US. Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Cancún keep the same time all year.

What’s the time difference between Mexico City and New York?

As of 2026, Mexico City is 1 hour behind New York in winter and 2 hours behind from March to November, while the US is on daylight saving time and Mexico isn’t.

Is Cancún on the same time as Mexico City?

No. As of 2026, Cancún and the rest of Quintana Roo are an hour ahead of Mexico City all year, on UTC−5.
